The things you find when avoiding exam revision :)

I've been killing time while my lunch cooks (and not studying!) by revisiting a site I found some time ago - www.nolongerquivering.com

The website itself is deeply disturbing; it chronicles the experiences, frequently abusive, of women and families who were once part of the 'Quiver Full' movement. In a nutshell, this movement teaches that women are absolutely subject to their fathers and then their husbands, and that no birth control of any sort should be used, in fact, quite the opposite; God will give you as many children 'as you can handle', meaning families of a dozen and more children. The website itself is worth checking out in a morbid, 'oh my word, I can't believe it!' sort of way. But in its FAQ section, I came across this article - http://nolongerquivering.com/2010/03/16/nlq-faq-how-did-you-get-yourself-into-this-mess/

I found it interesting, despite being writen by someone who is obviously still a commited theist. It outlines just how the Christian Right has grown in the US, and why so many notionally intelligent, educated people subscribe to it. As someone who, through my professed atheism, frequently sits gobsmacked in bewilderment by the actions, anger, hypocricy and scary political theology of the Christian Right, this was an enlightening piece, giving me an understanding of how people arrive at that place. With that understanding, there are few old discussions with a few select individuals, some of whom I care about deeply, that I'd like to revisit.

An atheist article it isn't, but as an insight into how people are drawn into 'logical madness', it's a worthwhile read.
