As you may know, the 'Rapture' is this Saturday. Our pubcrawl is the day before, which is a pretty cool coincidence, but that is beside the point. I thought I would make this comment before the day and I am sure that some, or many of you have thought of this too.
When it is found that no one ascends to heaven, as goes with these thing, it will not be seen as a contradiction of the faith by the majority. For the most part, it will be seen as a miscalculation. These people were probably not part of any action relating to it, and don't really think anything so amazing would happen. For them, god is more subtle. This non-event will have little impact on them as it will be dismissed.
But for those who take this seriously, it will be seen as "It is because everyone is a sinner and not worthy of being saved" (Of course, this would contradict the sacrifice of Jesus, but that is beside the point). It may even be blamed on the progression of societal change. It may come in the form of an attack on particular parts society "It's those damn Muslims/Atheists/Someone else", an attack on the consumer/short sighted nature of the western world, or an attack on the conduct of 'younger generations' and their promiscuity or something equally absurd.
Really, the exact words are beside the point. But what it will do is, once again, demonstrate that when confronted with conflicting evidence to their views, most people would rather rush to its defence (and strengthen their own belief) than re-evaluate it in light of new evidence.
